Saugatuck Center for the Arts
Have you ever been to the Saugatuck Center for the Arts (SCA)? The SCA was founded in 2000. The SCA is a non profit organization. The SCA is one of Saugatuck's top tourist attractions! The SCA is a fun place for kids and family and everyone to just have a fun time!
When four artists came to Saugatuck, they saw the entrance of Saugatuck; it was a was a big, rotting, rusting old pie factory! Then they got thinking… an art center would be a great, successful place in Saugatuck. Did you know that the SCA’s theater was originally the pie freezer for the pie company? The read beams outside were part of the pie building, and the garage doors were the pie transporting and load truck area. Such a small town like Saugatuck didn't even have an art center. Saugatuck is such a colorful town and there needed to be a center for the arts in a town that is so supportive of the arts. SCA should definitely be one of the top places that you should visit for your visit to Saugatuck! Its not all about art, since the SCA has many features for kid of all ages! The SCA has year round fun creative programs for kids and adults, especially during the summer. In the summer there are camps and classes every week. Its a great way to find your inner artist! There is a huge variety to chose from, from art to music to acting. What a fun and new way for young people to be more creative throughout the summer. The ages for camp are from kindergarten through 6 and 7th grade. Other summer activities include when they had a group called Dream Big come to the SCA this past summer, and they are going to be coming again. They also had a another group called Broadway Break Through. Both groups have been here in the past summers. The camps are for kids of all ages for singing, acting, and the arts. The SCA has been around for a long while and it wouldn't be here if it weren't for our loving art town of Saugatuck! We certainly love it and they hope you do! We hope, on your next visit to Saugatuck, that you come and check it out! Another program going on and is called Art A-Loan hosted at the SCA. This program started because of a High school Language Arts teacher named Christa Wise. She had started up Art A-Loan years ago. This is how the program works: she has the Elementary, Middle and High School art teachers keep their students’ best art pieces. She then picks approximately forty selections from all of the entries. She takes fabric called “mats “ that come in all different colors and then she hangs them up for display. People from all over town can come and rent out the pieces of art for the year. They pay 100 dollars to loan the piece. The program is a great way to raise money for the schools and awareness for the local young, talented artists as well as this program which happens in October every year. There is the Film Festival too. It is coming up again in November. The Film Festival is where they have kids make their own videos that is mostly based off of most everyday people's lives. The SCA’s hours are: yearly, Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm. On weekends, when they have a performance, then they are open. If not, then they are otherwise closed. Summer there is always theater, and a few family friendly classes for kids. There is also adult theater too. Adult classes include cooking classes with Mr. Laperriere in the off season from 9 am through 8 pm. The best person to get a hold of is Kristin Armstrong at 269-857-2933. You can also visit their website at sc4a.org. |
Imagine walking or driving up to a place that was once a pie factory. A huge grey building, sculptures out front, and surrounded by trees. The inside is the best, once you go inside and see the stage you will never forget it. The SCA (Saugatuck Center for The Arts) is a great place for families and friends to go and get involved with the arts.
When you walk into the building you first enter the lobby; a long and grey room speckled with red chairs. If you walk further into the building you can find a gallery. In the gallery you can find different art, from paintings to sculptures, of all shapes and sizes. Then if you walk just beyond the gallery you will find one of the two entrances that enter the stage area. The dark lights, high ceiling with many spotlights and the chairs. There are tons of chairs all looking onto the stage. The stage is huge, and when you are on it you feel important. That is what the stage is.
I have had a few personal experiences there. I have been on stage, acting with a group from our local library. When you are up there you can see everyone, even with the lights hitting you in the face. Other times I was there with my class. We watched movies there, that was a part of the film festival. We watched movies made for kids all through the elementary and beyond.
If you’re wondering how Saugatuck was so lucky as to get the SCA, it was because the community needed an art center. Adults and kids both like the exhibits and programs, one exhibit they have often is “Art ‘a Loan“ an exhibit of art by kids of Douglas Elementary and Saugatuck Middle/High School. There are exhibits for kids during the days off, and during the summer, they always change! Other things the SCA offers are demonstrations such as “The Art of Classic Mexican Cuisine” and productions like “Real to Reel: Blood Brothers” just to name a couple. These are high quality and unique programs for an affordable price.
For your enjoyment the SCA is open year round. They are located at 400 Culver Street PO Box 940 Saugatuck. And the hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. If you would like to contact them you could call 269-857-2399, or email them at info@sc4a.org. The SCA is a great place to visit and expand your knowledge and mind.
