Local Fishing Spots
In the seventeen hundreds, the local people have been fishing since they have got here to the little town of Saugatuck. With the abundance of great fish to eat and also great game fish. Saugatuck is located on the Kalamazoo River in western lower Michigan. In our town, fishing for some people is a way of life. The fishing is some of the best in Michigan and I’m here to tell you some of the great fishing and fishing spots Saugatuck has to offer.
In our town, Salmon fishing is huge. There are about fourteen to sixteen charter boats that run out of the port of Saugatuck. This is nice thing to do on a sunny day when your family has nothing to do. Some of the boats names are Best Chance, Best Chance Too, Miryha, Four C’s, U.S Male, Hoppenero and Cohooker just to name a few. Most charters range from $550 to a half of day and $750 for a full day. In the spring the Steelhead (Rainbow Trout) run up the river and lots of people fish for their rich tasty taste. Also in the fall the salmon run from mid September through the second week of October. You will see lots of people going for the salmon though. The recommended lure is a hot-in-tot, which resembles a alewife.
In Saugatuck we have many fishing spots on the river, like Wick’s Park, located across the street from Wick’s Bar and Grille. This is where lots of people go to fish and is one of the best. You would fish on the sea wall next to where some benches are to sit on and watch your poles.
Next is under the Blue Star bridge heading into Douglas. There are two spots to fish there, one is on the northwest side of the bridge and the other is on the southwest side of the bridge. When your go there you will see that there are many benches and places to sit. When you fish there you want to cast out a ways so you get into the deep water where all the big fish are.
The last spot is the ”Saugatuck sign” us locals call it. It’s located down the steps from Mt.Baldhead. It is almost on a dock like thing with two benches and a table. You will catch catfish, sheephead, walleye, salmon(only in the fall for salmon) etc...
In Saugatuck you can see that we love to fish. The charters are some of the best they also love to have the young kids come out, the fish are some of the biggest in the lake, and the people are nice so come on down to Saugatuck and fish with the best, With an experience of a lifetime.
